Applying pharmacogenetics in primary care

How Dutch pharmacist Vince Maar uses DNA testing to improve medication reviews in collaboration with GPs

Integrating pharmacogenetics into primary care

Vince Maar, pharmacist and former board member of the Association of Young Pharmacists (VJA), wanted to improve medication assessments using pharmacogenetic testing in close collaboration with general practitioners. As part of a practical project, GPs submitted complex patient cases for review. By aligning medication choice and dosage with each patient’s genetic profile, Vince aimed to optimise therapy outcomes.

Applying DNA insights in medication review

Using the iGene Pharmaco pharmacogenetic test, Vince integrates genetic profiles directly into his medication reviews. The test identifies DNA variations that influence how patients metabolise medicines. This allows for precise dose adjustments and helps prevent adverse drug reactions. All recommendations are based on the KNMP/DPWG pharmacogenetic guidelines, ensuring that every adjustment is clinically validated and scientifically reliable.

Strengthening collaboration between pharmacists and GPs

By integrating pharmacogenetic data into their joint medication reviews, Vince and the participating GPs have improved communication and decision-making in complex patient cases. Both prescribers and patients report greater satisfaction, as therapy adjustments are more targeted and side effects are reduced.

Towards more effective and preventive care

“As the demand for healthcare continues to rise, we must focus on prevention and on using medicines effectively,” Vince explains. “With tools like pharmacogenetic testing, we can apply our professional expertise to achieve that — in close collaboration with GPs.”
